About The Band
Scunthorpe Concert Band is a friendly amateur concert band based in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire.
We are scored for woodwind, brass, and percussion and play a varied repertoire of music that is constantly evolving and being added to.
We have players from a variety of ages and musical backgrounds but we all share the same common goal - to have fun and make music.
We rehearse every Thursday from 19:30 until 21:30 at Ashby Methodist Church, Ashby High Street, Scunthorpe DN16 2JT.
Join Us
We are currently looking for players to further strengthen and compliment all of the existing sections within the band.
We recommend players looking to join the band are of at least ABRSM Grade 4 standard or equivalent.
We are very welcoming to new players and do not hold auditions so whether you're an experienced player, someone who is returning to playing after a long break, or an adult learner looking to join a band for the first time, you'll be sure of a warm welcome at SCB.
Our Musical Director
Christian Widdowson
Christian started playing trombone aged 10, gaining his grade 8 at the age of 17. A product of the Doncaster Music Service, Christian played in a variety of youth music groups gaining a good knowledge of playing within both large and small ensembles. During his time at Durham University, Christian played in the University Concert Band and Brass Band under the baton of Ray Farr.
After university Christian took a break from music whilst training to become a commercial pilot. Christian joined Scarborough Concert Band on Trumpet in 2007, before later joining Scunthorpe Concert Band on Trombone in 2013.
Christian trained as a conductor under the guidance of Ian Mittchell, a former British Army Bandmaster. We appointed Christian as our Musical Director in October 2021 and the band is going from strength to strength under his leadership.
