About The Band
Scunthorpe Concert Band is a friendly amateur concert band based in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire.
We are scored for woodwind, brass, and percussion and play a varied repertoire of music that is constantly evolving and being added to.
We have players from a variety of ages and musical backgrounds but we all share the same common goal - to have fun and make music.
We rehearse every Thursday from 19:30 until 21:30 at Ashby Methodist Church, Ashby High Street, Scunthorpe DN16 2JT.
We are currently looking for players to further strengthen and compliment all of the existing sections within the band.
We recommend players looking to join the band are of at least ABRSM Grade 4 standard or equivalent.
We are very welcoming to new players and do not hold auditions so whether you're an experienced player, someone who is returning to playing after a long break, or an adult learner looking to join a band for the first time, you'll be sure of a warm welcome at SCB.
Our Musical Directors
Ian joined the British Army in 1985, serving in the band on the Blues and Royals as a trombonist and pianist. In 1997 he earned a place on a three-year course to become a bandmaster, with a subsequent posting as bandmaster of the King’s Division Normandy Band, followed by postings with the Band of the Irish Guards, and the Band of the Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band.
Ian left the army in 2010 and went into peripatetic music teaching for One Education Music in Manchester whilst also enrolling at Durham University on a Master’s degree course studying composition. In January 2011 Ian also took up the appointment of Bandmaster of the Lancashire Artillery Volunteers Band as an Army Reservist. Following his graduation from Durham University, Ian became Composer in Residence of the Bands of the Royal Oman Police in January 2017. He completed his work in Oman in February 2021 and returned to the UK, joining Scunthorpe Concert Band in September 2021 following the end of COVID restrictions. Ian lives locally and teaches brass, piano, music theory, and conducting.
Christian started playing trombone aged 10, gaining his grade 8 at the age of 17. A product of the Doncaster Music Service, Christian played in a variety of youth music groups gaining a good knowledge of playing within both large and small ensembles. During his time at Durham University, Christian played in the University Concert Band and Brass Band under the baton of Ray Farr.
After university Christian took a break from music whilst training to become a commercial pilot. Christian joined Scarborough Concert Band on Trumpet in 2007, before later joining Scunthorpe Concert Band on Trombone in 2013. In 2017 Christian took over the Musical Director duties for the first time on an interim basis with the band going from strength to strength under his guidance, before returning to the trombone section when a permanent MD could be appointed. Just before COVID struck in 2020, Christian took the reins for a second time on an interim basis before being officially appointed, along with Ian, as the Musical Directors in October 2021.
